Thanks GyB, I was not aware of GOG having updated their installer so I was
using one I had downloaded more than a year ago - had no problems with the new
installer. Weird though as my old saves from the early parts of the game
worked. Anyway, this was clearly a case of PBKAC and thus invalid.
