@Dan I've tried with tasksel, it freezes just the same. 

Curiously, I've played the game through to 'Cerberus Headquarters" episode,
meaning almost to the end. But here, ironically, it freezes in a deterministic
fashion.

I reopen the bug because it was closed after resolution of a minor probem (IM
static memory corruption), but the main problem (the freeze) is still open to
investigation.
