I tried the demo with wine 1.7.15 or 1.7.16

No matter what settings I tried, it complained about some effects. But I could
pass into game if I clicked few times ok and then x. But the game itself
crashed.

So regarding my experinece I wouldnt expect the hole game working with up to
date wine, without some patches/dll overrides.
