Removed wine-1.4.1, installed wine-1.7.17 and it works! 

I'm able to receive/send to the GPS: 

Garmin Mapsource (6137) under Ubuntu, connecting to eTrex Legend with a
USB-Serial adapter. 

The following error is still occurring in the console, but it now connects!
