The GOG version is DRM-free and installs and starts without problems so long as
directmusic is installed first. He may be referring to bug 13351, which is 6
years old but didn't have a known workaround until about a year ago; without
that workaround, the game is unplayable. 

As for artifacts following the cursor, I don't see any, but I have an Nvidia
card with the proprietary driver.
