I use Wine 1.7.11 and launch the game through Steam with Wine pretending to be
Windows XP. I'm not using any overrides at all.

Is it possible that there's something about the CD version that is different
than the Steam version, and that is causing the crashes? Perhaps copy
protection or some other nonsense.
