I finally worked it out and managed to do the bisect.

To bisect (for reference):

1. Patch MSI (Bug 18070)
2. Install liblcms1:i386
3. Install and use gcc-4.5
4. "winetricks ie6" (various bugs)
5. "winetricks msxml3" (sometimes)

The failed installation is caused by c257ef317bb665eb65f4b7625b1e0d7dc969d52c
