Still an issue as of wine-1.7.9-165-g0ae7b5f.
I came across this bug when trying to install patch v1.01 to the game 'I am
Alive' from Ubisoft. Installation was aborted during the 'patching game files'
stage.
'winetricks mspatcha' is a workaround.
