Okay, so there's some good news: for nvidia binary users, this bug can be
resolved completely by exporting __GL_SHADER_DISK_CACHE=1, and then allowing
all the effects to play once.

As a result, I'm closing this since it seems obvious that the issue is related
to shader compilation.
