I just tested this and the red boxes are NOT present.
This demo version has been updated over the years and has added support for
widescreen resolutions, etc.

So I went back and tried the Steam version in a clean 32-bit Wineprefix. I
disabled the DirectX installer bundled with the game. Still the same problem
with the red boxes around text characters in game.

So it's only the Steam version that is affected by this bug...

Any channel I could trace that would perhaps differentiate between the 2
versions what is going wrong??
