For me with 1.7.25, I don't get a crash. The install finishes, but I don't see
any game files. It later tries to install an ancient bundled Steam, which fails
nowadays.

If I install Steam before installing the demo, then when trying to install the
demo it asks me for a Steam product key (even though it's a free demo?).

Are you using a clean WINEPREFIX?
