You left out a couple of important steps from your instructions. First, Manual
Unpacking is selected by default in the Plugins menu, and the menu itself is
grayed out, so it cannot be changed. You need to install winetricks vb6run to
work around that. Second, xdoc2txt.exe requires mfc42.dll, so that too has to
be installed with winetricks.

After getting that sorted out, I compared folders with .doc and .xls files, and
even compared two .docx files directly. No crash.

Which brings us back to your unsupported, patched Wine version: that may be the
cause of the crashes you are getting. If it is, this bug is invalid. You need
to retest in plain Wine.
