Retested with latest open source drivers and it works partially.
Some changes though...

Kept the Radeon 6850 graphics but changed distro and kernel..
and it worked for some time ... 

Using kernel 3.19 but with the latest 1.7.40 it goes further than the intro
screen still keeps reporting d3d errors but it crashs when it tries to access
the "Cerberus Network" ...
