A workaround for losing focus when pressing Alt to find items is to reassign
the key to something else in Diablo II's options, by pressing Escape and going
to Configure Controls>Show Items. Personally, I use Ctrl.

Using Wine 1.7.49 on Ubuntu 15.04.
