Still present in 1.7.33.

It's not just when you select difficulty, there's also a crash when you change
settings in the options menu. I think they're about the same problem.
It's not the usual crash because no bactrace is generated, not a relevant line
in the terminal or in the game log file appears. The game suddenly quits
without warnings.

Comment #6 is probably right, files and directories are missing in
Steam/userdata/xxxxxxx/41070/local. Saved games and the game configuration file
SeriousSam3.ini should be here. The configuration file should be updated as you
change settings in the game; this is one of the occasions when the game
crashes.

I should add that the game executable uses Valve's CEG DRM (Custom Executable
Generation) -> bug #32515. Don't know if it adds anything to the problem.
