This looks like Bug 30984.
To confirm, could you check if reverting
43984f355a2905e16075a9df3d7fbe463761e853 makes it work?

If so then, it would be a duplicate.

But your workarounds in comment 1 seem interesting to "The Sims 3" users, so
maybe they should be copied to that bug(if it is a duplicate), or in the appdb
entry for "The Sims 3".
