MultiRes (a free utility from EnTech http://entechtaiwan.com/util/multires.shtm
) exhibits the same behavior. Moreover, Wine allows to change resolution only
once for this utility and 3DMark. On a second change it spews this error:

err:xrandr:xrandr12_set_current_mode Resolution change not successful --
perhaps display has changed?
