Disabling the sound device in Windows is not the same as not having access to
the sound device in Linux. Your system was broken.

I guess Wine shouldn't crash, but...

If that's the case then Wine is mimicking Windows, which it is supposed to do.

Is it even possible to deny access to the sound device in Windows? I've never
heard of this ever being done. I doubt that it can be.
