I'm using Wine 1.7.33 and haven't applied any of the patches and the bug is
present. A workaround for users of WMs that support workspaces and keyboard
shortcuts to switch between them is to have a workspace just for AoE, so
instead of Alt+Tab you switch to a different workspace for other things. You
can Alt+Tab there as much as you like and the game will run smoothly (just
don't Alt+Tab on AoE's workspace). You can also switch workspaces as much as
you like. I tested this with xmonad only.
