I had the exact same problems trying to install Star Wars Empire at War (GOG
version 2.0.0.3)  with wine versions 1.5.9 and 1.7.41.

Here are my specs:
CPU: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU     E6850  @ 3.00GHz
Video Card:  NVIDIA Corporation GK106 [GeForce GTX 650 Ti]
Driver: Nvidia 346.46
OS: Linux Mint 17.1 
Kernel: 3.13.0-37-generic #64-Ubuntu SMP Mon Sep 22 21:28:38 UTC 2014 x86_64
x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

I was able to get around this problem by installing Empire at War with Wine
version 1.1.30.  (This was done through PlayOnLinux - which I know is not wine,
but hopefully it can help with your problem.)
