Apologies for reopening I managed to get things working. I'm a newbie to Linux
so I can't provide any detailed steps but it took lots of Googling and lots of
trying things out. Even installing the latest Wine took quite a bit of
learning.

If it helps anyone, you can get Steam itself running under Wine and that's how
I was able to launch the game - using the old Steam install from Windows which
luckily was on my secondary HDD. You also have to Google how to get Steam to
show text properly.
