I fully agree with Michaels comment.

No matter if you call it an application bug or not, in contrast to other
"difficult to solve bugs" Wine could easily be compatible here. Not sure if its
still the case, but originally Matteo told me (I think it was on IRC) that no
application depends on extension filtering.

We'll definitely keep this fix in our Staging tree, until a revert was accepted
upstream, or a better solution is found.
