You are right, it will be a good idea for compositor/window manager to
implement this feature. I know only a compositor that can zoom to a window,
it's compiz.
But others apps like Dosbox, ScummVM, Mame and others emulators already
implement this feature: whatever the game native resolution, the game
resolution/content is adapted (scaled/stretched) to the window or desktop.
For the moment play a game with a 640x480 ou 800x600 resolution is a pain with
Wine on modern screen.
