Sorry it's taken me a while to get to this.  It appears to be far more
complicated than whether a file is local or not, and I have not yet thought of
a good way to handle this.  It's possible that we could come up with a
workaround for this specific applications, but I believe that the appropriate
way to solve this is to store the type of the link in an extended filesystem
attribute.
