I know that Windows changed winfile to a simple wrapper for opening an explorer
file window, but in my opinion it would be better to leave the software as
winfile was up to Windows 2000 (if I remember correctly).
Actually winfile supports a set of interfaces that allows the integration with
thirdy party plugins, see here:

An example of these plugins if an old version of Graphic Workshop of Alchemy
Mindworks, that I had used in the past. Keeping the current implementation
would allow to run them, although I do not know if those extensions are
supported or not at this time of writing.
