With this commit being part of Wine Development (1.9.12)

and and using the setting "glsl=disabled" in winetricks, the game plays
perfectly. 

I have installed the game to a clean 32-bit Wine prefix in Windows 7 mode and I
have been playing it the whole weekend and I haven't had any errors or crashes. 

Without setting "glsl=disabled" the game has issues with the mini-map and the
larger version of the map. The issue is that the mini-map fails to redraw
itself when re-entering an explored area and the larger version of the map
would simply not display. "glsl=disabled" solves that last issue for me and the
game plays as well as the Windows native version.
