Calling this a regression is a bit misleading.  What's changed is that in the
absence of Courier New, one random font is being picked instead of another.  It
was just luck that the original random font had the right metrics to layout in
the same way as Courier New.

The correct fix (short of implementing our own version of Courier New) is to
install Courier New.
