I abandonded the 1.8 branch and ran it again with 1.9.20 (as came from
MacPorts).

I get the window open, it has the menu bars, I do hear music (thus not sure
about the JACK error, but whatever) ... some flashing at one point in lower
right, but I don't see anything else.
