Sins of a Solar Empire: Rebellion launched with wine 1.8.4

Thanks, that indeed seems to be the case. The game ships a copy of the native
d3dx9_36.dll which is loaded with wine 1.8.4 from Debian backports. I attached
the full log run with "WINEDEBUG=+loaddll".
