I've perceived the same problem. The solution to this problem was already given
here: https://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=version&iId=9406
The user states:

   The game requires DirectX 9 to be installed.

And there is nothing more to it, really. Executing `wintricks directx9` does
the trick. Installing the compiler or dlls does not.
