I've apparently got an old version of Notepad++ (6.3.2), but I can confirm OP's
#1 issue. I have not confirmed on windows, however, so take it with a grain of
salt.

To reproduce (assume npp=$(wine notepad++.exe $@)):
$ npp foo1.txt
# open a second terminal window, and let it keep focus
$ npp foo2.txt

notepad++ opens foo2.txt, but does not gain focus at this point. I feel like
I've seen that happen on Windows, but I don't have regular access to Windows so
I can't verify.
