Still no response from LKML.

It is possible, though, to revert the two changes made by patch-4.8.2-3 in
static struct page *follow_page_pte of mm/gup.c in recent kernel versions to
make Wine work again. Currently, I'm running kernel 4.8.13 with that applied. I
will prepare a patch for those who want to build a custom kernel.
