Windows apps can be controlled through taskbar and can report their status in
taskbar.

Though linux doesn't have this functionality, at least in KDE Plasma there is a
tray for notifications where apps can put progressbars and icons.

The functionality is a bit similar so the straightforward solution it to
implement Taskbar Extensions through KUiServer
