You didn't need to start from scratch, you just needed to 'make clean'(from the
top) or cd into the directory that had the failure and 'make clean' there.  

I marked it resolved: not our bug because it is probably a bug in make when
used on large projects(although it might be a bug in the wine build tools or
wine's makefile, but it isn't that important to me that making wine can be able
to be interrupted).
