I did the same as you did, but same message. Strange..
I have succeeded running in virtual machine with win7 as guest, but had issues
with mouse movements. In-game camera scrolling was horrible.
The games in Wine like "Faces of War" and "Men of War" worked for me as
expected.
There has to be salvation with this good old game.
