Can one of you try starting the game with LIBGL_ALWAYS_SOFTWARE=1 to force mesa
to do software rendering? I tried that successfully.

LIBGL_ALWAYS_SOFTWARE=1 wine GOTHIC.EXE

Assuming you're not using proprietary graphics drivers.

Maybe decrease the resolution first - the initial conversation took like 2
hours on my Core2Duo laptop :)

Other than that I don't really have a clue, as much as I'd like to help fixing
this.. don't you get anything meaningful from the regular console output
without any WINEDEBUG=foo paramters?
