In short, problem affects Nvidia proprietary on Ubuntu 17.10. Nouveau is fine. 
Only wine that works is the one in Artful repo (2.18).  WineHQ ppa and building
from sources generates this failure.

Problem doesn't exist on earlier version of Ubuntu, 16.04 with Nvidia 390.12 as
tested by mrdeathjr28 at yahoo.es.  Thanks.


Too bad what we do know about the problem is trivial compared to what we don't.
