As far as I know there was no demo version released.

I also have the GOG.com version of the game and I can reproduce the crash when
csmt is enabled with the Nvidia binary drivers in vanilla Wine 3.12, but not in
Wine-Staging, thanks to this patch by Józef Kucia:

which reminds me of bug #45382.
