This also happens to the DX9 version of the game after some time of playing,
usually when VMM usage of the process gets to around 3.5 GB. So I believe this
is a memory issue. Usually, the game crashes shortly after seeing this effect.
DX9 runs only in 32-bit mode, so I believe it could work better in 64-bit mode
but that is limited to DX11 which does not work at all in vanilla wine.
