With Firefox 52.7.2esr (the current Extended Support Release) I found that
setting browser.tabs.remote.autostart.2=false did not solve the issue for me. 
Firefox still printed "WARNING: Failed to launch tab subprocess" and tabs were
empty.  Setting security.sandbox.content.level=0 (which came up in
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1385928) worked.
