The dependencies are basically to make sure that all patches can be
applied/compiled at once, so sometimes patchsets have 'dependencies' that
aren't actually necessary.

It would indeed be nice if someone could come up with a feasible solution to
this problem. I doubt that person will be me, however. Besides which there are
many other widely-used staging patches that will be much easier to upstream.
