bunch of hacks

I did a bit more testing and i think the staging-patch is not needed after all.
Maybe the window was black because the app crashed. I got something running
with a bunch of hacks attached here. 
Maybe you could try the hacks, and if it works for you, each bug should go into
it`s own bugreport i guess.
