I can report good news. I had not installed any package manually. Following the
procedure as described for Ubuntu 18.04 in the forum post

Ubuntu 18.04:
Download the Release.key. Navigate to the directory you downloaded it to and
install it with
Code:
sudo apt-key add Release.key

Add the repository:
Code:
sudo apt-add-repository 'deb
https://download.opensuse.org/repositories/Emulators:/Wine:/Debian/xUbuntu_18.04/
./'

Then update:
Code:
sudo apt update

has worked fine for me.
