You known, I'm either completely misunderstanding it or I just might have found
something:

compare 
mono/netcore/System.Private.CoreLib/shared/System/Runtime/InteropServices/Marshal.Unix.cs 
and

mono/netcore/System.Private.CoreLib/shared/System/Runtime/InteropServices/Marshal.Windows.cs
