You were right! I checked the timestamp on the executable and discovered that
the game SELF-updated on 11/29/2018 10:03am EST, Thanksgiving Day!  I ran the
game and it ran fine. I shut it down and denuvo obfuscated the executable. 

The steamdb doesn't show any updates on the day.
