I used a 'small download' from the game website and could not reproduce the
problem, the game is starting just fine. Could you please give the exact
reference for the version which is crashing and the output of 'sha1sum <file>',
where <file> is the installer?

Could you please also attach WINEDEBUG=+d3d8,+d3d,+d3d_shader debug output?
