Okay, not strictly true:
When the game first loads it appears as though nothing at all happens and the
screen may have locked up. However, alt-tabbing to another window allows the
game to immediately start. I couldn't recreate a crash, however.

Where did you get your Wine build from? What version of Ubuntu are you using?
