It should probably go without saying that it's very strange that machine breaks
in such a manner.

A short return is somewhat similar to the error I had already observed on
64-bit Windows 10 version 1507, where the kernel seemed to report success but
then asynchronously fill out the fields. The fact that it happens consistently
(and apparently with the same size every time) is weirder, though.
