I can confirm that winetricks arial was the missing piece.

The program started and I was able to test the basic functions.

I don't know if it's normal, but the log was flooded with this message:
0053:fixme:d3d9:d3d9_swapchain_Present Ignoring dirty_region 0000000001B14EC0.
