That's not what wine-gecko is used for. wine-gecko is for the embedded browser
API offered by mshtml, and subsets thereof.

It's also used for iexplore.exe, but in practice this is rarely opened directly
by applications. Websites opened by win32 applications with the default browser
in fact do end up going through xdg-open if available [and absent any custom
configuration].
